Course Statement:
My name is Aaron Figueroa, and I am majoring in Graphic Design in Animation. I’m newer to the world of art, I have been practicing on finding and creating my craft for a little over two years, but my love for art goes back far beyond that. The amount of joy I find in being able to articulate my ideas from my head down onto a piece of paper or in a digital or 3D environment is insurmountable. I found myself with all these fun and interesting ideas, but unable to express them properly. So I dove head first into art and haven’t looked back.

Prior to life drawing I haven’t had really any experience with drawing the figure but maybe once or twice for one of my animation classes to produce a character concept for a 2D and 3D character. I found the most challenging concept for life drawing is the speed it takes to create a cohesive drawing. Along with that, I also found it the most rewarding part of my experience in life drawing as well. Although I still have a long way to go to catch up to these speeds and artistic talent, it taught me to stop second guessing myself and to just go for it. I often find myself more in my head than rather touching mediums to paper and this was a major hindering factor in completing my drawings. The most valuable lesson I learned through it all is proportion sizes and what to focus on in the composition. I might not have to do formal drawing for my career path. It’s more of a sketch for concept, but either way, I still plan on continuing to develop my drawing skills for as long as I can draw.

While working through life drawing, I found myself looking back at what I’ve completed and have thought about my lack of speed, my struggle with line variation and shading. I have come a long way from when I started and I am very proud of that. There is definitely room for improvement and I plan to continue working towards it all. The medium I enjoyed the most is charcoal pencil because I felt like I had more control over my strokes line weight and that has helped me towards varying my lines. I found the class prompt about scribble drawing to be valuable, it’s really neat to see how you can convey a figure or really anything from well placed lines. A few artists I admire and follow are Alberto Mielgo and Gints Zilbalodis. I chose and arts career because it has always fascinated me what the human mind can come up with and create. I found myself one day not being able to get these ideas I’ve had out of my head and into concept, and I said no more. I’m passionate about character animation and hard surface modeling. After AC I plan on attending A&M’s Animation Program.
